James Vigmond was called to the Bar in 1983. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario (1978) and Queen's University Law School (1981). His practice is restricted to serious personal injury, wrongful death, disability and medical malpractice cases. He has been certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in civil litigation.
Mr. Vigmond is the past President of the Ontario Trial Lawyers' Association and is a former Director of the Advocates' Society. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and is a former State Delegate to the American Association for Justice. Mr. Vigmond is the past President of The Simcoe County Law Association.
Mr. Vigmond has published a number of articles and has presented seminars in the area of personal injury litigation and trial advocacy for numerous associations including the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the Atlantic Provinces Trial Lawyers Association, the B.C. Trial Lawyers Association, the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocates Society, the Forensic Accountants Association, the American Psychological Association and the Brain Injury Association. Mr. Vigmond also presented to the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Physician Medical Research Foundation Symposium as well as hosted Practical Strategies Conferences for Health Care Professionals. He has been an instructor with the Ontario Centre for Advocacy Training. Presently, Mr. Vigmond writes a regular column and sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of "Canadian Disability Journal".
Mr. Vigmond has appeared as counsel at all levels of Courts in Ontario. In 2003, he appeared as counsel to the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association before the Court of Appeal in McIntyre v. A-G of Ontario, which authorized lawyers to charge contingency fees in personal injury cases.
He is a regular featured speaker at the Oatley-McLeish Lecture Series and a contributing author in the loose leaf text entitled the Oatley-McLeish Guide to Personal Injury Practice in Ontario. He is a founding editor of The Practical Strategies Threshold Reporter - a loose leaf report series containing summaries and editorial comment on significant cases interpreting the "threshold". Mr. Vigmond is a sessional instructor at Queen's University law school where he developed and teaches Personal Injury Advocacy.
In addition, Mr. Vigmond is a founding director of the Thompson Foundation Centre, a foundation dedicated to providing mental health resources for adolescents and their families. He is currently a Director and the Fundraising Chair of the Canadian Paraplegic Association - Ontario. Jim enjoys traveling, scuba diving and fishing. He has run the New York and Toronto Marathons. He is not very fast.
Jim is an instructor at Queen’s University Law School where he teaches Personal Injury Advocacy.
Jim was voted by his peers to be among The Best Lawyers in Canada for 2008 and 2009.
